The Explorer 1 was the first artificial satellite launched by the US. It was launched on February 1, 1958. The Explorer 1 led the Explorer series, with 13 successful satellites launched by 1962.

Sputnik 2 (aka “Muttnik”), is best known for being the first spacecraft to carry a living organism into space. In November, 1957 the ship was launched into space by the Soviet Union. It carried “Laika”, a dog, who died within the first day. Sputnik 2  orbited the earth 2,570 times before burning up in Earth’s atmosphere in April 1958.

Sputnik (later referred to as Sputnik 1) was the first artificial satellite launched into space. It was launched by the Soviets on October 4, 1957, during the Cold War. Sputnik 1 was boosted into space by a ship called Sputnik, too.  Sputnik 1 lasted for three months before burning up in the atmoshpere on January 4th, 1958. Sputnik was a huge step in space exploration.
