The “Space Race” occured during the Cold War. It was a race between the US and the Soviet Union to see who could be the first and most successful in space. Both countries were putting alot of money into space travel programs. In the end the Soviet Union was the first one into space, by launching Sputnik.

The Cold War was a state of tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. It wasn’t a real war, because there was no official declaration of war ever. The US and the USSR were competing to be the best. One of the ways they were doing this was through what is now known as the “Space Race“.
